A glance in the mirror:
A runner, having just tied his shoes, glanced in a mirror. He had
always looked deeper than those simple reflections. The eyes do not
lie, but they cannot see the life within. Judging by the angle of the
light streaming through the room, the sun had only been up for a
number of hours-- that is, if you consider the mysterious-looking
speckles of light passing through the fog daylight. Looking back in
the mirror, his curiosity began surveying himself. He was silent,
suggesting deep contemplation and a strong self-discipline. He was
oft to say that minutes of diligent thought could accomplish more
than years and years of non-productive speech. Yet there was conflict
in that, you could tell that he was decisive, that he wasn't afraid
of playing a bold hand for the general good, that he believed in his
own abilities.
His blue eyes seemed to glow with much fervor. It was obvious that
he was kind and caring, and always responsible. And there was
something else, another dimension of him. A feeling of honesty? of
focus? of dedication? Many would say that there was always more to
him than the eye could be committed to comprehend. By these (the
second most rigorous) standards, they believed him to be an
intelligent, industrious, and courteous man. By the most difficult
standards, by his own, he was never content at working for, or giving
any less than, his very best. He never lived far from his honor, for
that in his mind was the key to success. The goals of his were always
a challenge. With much hard-work, he was able to produce quality work
and achieve his goals.
And yet, in his presence, there was something else that was
apparent. Leadership. He wasn't often giving orders for people to
accomplish, but rather performed his leadership in a more covert
manner. He would lead-- if only by example-- and thrive in that
function. You could tell by his rough hands and the callouses on his
feet that he wasn't afraid to obediently follow another's lead. There
was no hesitation in the pursuit of becoming not only good, but good
for something-- to become helpful. The thought of performing
hard-work was somehow appealing rather than appalling as so many
others would see it. He chose to do many things, not because they are
easy, but because they are hard. His work was consistently done with
masterful proficiency and with resounding efficiency.
As he turned from the mirror to glance outside, the fog didn't
seem so overbearing after all. Soon after, the sound of footsteps
retreated from earshot.
That is, in plain English:
"I see myself as a quiet and thoughtful person, trying to be
efficient at all times. My time and thought is mostly focused on
worldly issues, which are of great importance to me. But aside from
thinking or gathing knowledge to think more clearly (ie reading), I
like to run, bike, and hike. I play piano and violin (although I am
not very good at either). One could say that I am often hard upon
myself, punishing myself for my smallest faults. Because of this, my
goals are usually very high, which I often am able to reach. I like
to see into problems and find solutions: better ways of doing things.
I love life with a great passion, and am driven by one desire (which
is self-evident if you know me)."
"I am also a loyal Boy Scout, striving to fullfill the ideals of
Scouting and good living. I am often outdoors: running, camping,
hiking and biking."
